1. High Pass Mark (70%)

Unlike some basic awareness courses, Mintra maritime assessments typically require a minimum score of 70%. This leaves very little room for error, especially on technical questions regarding international regulations (SOLAS/STCW).

2. Focus on "Clear Grounds" for Detention

The course is specifically designed to help seafarers avoid Port State Control (PSC) detentions. The test asks questions from the perspective of an inspector looking for "clear grounds" to detain a vessel.

  • The Challenge: You aren't just tested on how to use the ECDIS, but on how to prove to an inspector that you are using it correctly (e.g., showing the last 12 hours of the voyage log or demonstrating a route safety check).

3. Integration of ISM and SOLAS Standards

The test is difficult because it mixes technical ECDIS knowledge with complex regulatory frameworks:

  • ISM Code: Questions often focus on the Company's Safety Management System (SMS) and how ECDIS procedures must follow it.

  • SOLAS Chapter V: You must know the legal requirements for backup arrangements (Paper charts vs. Dual ECDIS).

4. Technical "Trick" Questions

Commonly difficult areas in the Mintra assessment include:

  • Safety Settings: The logic behind Safety Contour vs. Safety Depth (and how they change based on the vessel’s dynamic draft).
  • Alarm Management: Identifying the difference between an Alarm, a Caution, and a Warning as per the latest IMO bridge alert management standards.
  • ENC Updates: Proving the "edition" and "week number" of charts—inspectors often ask this first, and the test mirrors this high-pressure scenario.

5. Simulator-Based Thinking

Mintra’s modern courses (like the JRC Type-Specific) often require you to understand the Operating Philosophy of the manufacturer. If you are used to a different system (e.g., Transas or Furuno), the logic of the Mintra/JRC interface in the test can be confusing.
